History

Ludhiana was a small village known as Meer Hota. In 1480, the current city was founded by the Lodi dynasty. The town, originally known as Lodhi-ana, was later renamed to Ludhiana. In the early 19th century, it was ruled by Maharaja Ranjit Singh for a short duration. In 1845, the city was also the site of a great battle in the First Sikh War. Ludhiana became a major industrial center and agricultural market because of its location on the Grand Trunk Road.
