History

Thekkady was ruled by the Pandya kings until the late 12th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this reserve was the hunting ground for the kings of Travancore. In 1895, the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed on the Periyar River. This resulted in the creation of an artificial lake in the Periyar valley. This lake became the core of the forest reserve, a spot where wild animals came to drink water and cool themselves. In 1899, it was declared a forest reserve. In 1978, the sanctuary became a part of Project Tiger and was renamed Periyar Tiger Reserve, and in 1992, it became a part of Project Elephant.
