Chirang is a, relatively new district in Assam, created on October 30, 2003, and functional from June 4, 2004, as part of the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD). Carved out of parts of Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, and Barpeta districts, its headquarters is at Kajalgaon. The name derives from Garo words "chi" (water) and "rang" (wealth), signifying its natural richness and great sage Bhrigu established his ashram.
