Darjeeling's history began as a part of the Kingdom of Sikkim, inhabited by the Lepchas before being invaded by Nepal's Gurkhas in the 1780s. The British East India Company acquired the area from Sikkim in 1835 and established it as a sanatorium and hill station. It later grew into a center for tea plantations, and many Nepalis were recruited to work in them. The region was formally made a district of British India, which included Kalimpong after the British secured it from Bhutan in 1865.
